Magnitude measures the energy released by an earthquake. Each whole number increase represents about 32 times more energy released.
Depth is how far below the Earth's surface the earthquake originated. Shallow quakes (0–70 km) tend to cause more surface damage than deep ones.
A tsunami warning means an earthquake may have generated a dangerous ocean wave. Always heed official warnings from your national emergency services.
